Seventy years of Hawker, in photographs

Fred Teague opened Hawker Motors in 1952, and the business has been part of the town ever since. Over the years we've gathered a collection of photographs covering the early days of Hawker, the old store and workshop, and the events that brought the world to this corner of the Flinders.

Two parts of the collection are online. Call in to the store to see more — there is always something on the walls worth stopping for.

Early Hawker

The town as it was: the Royal and Wonoka Hotels, Albert Packer at Bob Mansom's store and at the Quorn fuel depot, Hawker Motors in 1956, and the November 1924 market that yarded a record 13,000 head.

Donald Campbell on Lake Eyre, 1964

In 1964 Donald Campbell brought Bluebird to Lake Eyre and took the world land speed record. Our photographs show the camp on the lake, the track, the practice runs, and the local people who were there — including Dan Meaney alongside the car.
